Foot Health New Jersey

According to a recent survey conducted by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), 69% of Americans have never visited a podiatrist, however about 1 in 4 say they have suffered from some type of foot distress in the last twelve months. Of the 31% who do go to the podiatrist, nearly 90% said they were very satisfied with the treatment they received.

The ABCs of Foot Pain

Athlete’s foot - a common persistent infection of the foot caused by a microscopic fungus that lives on dead tissue of the hair, toenails, and outer skin layers. These fungi thrive in warm, moist environments such as shoes, stockings, and the floors of public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools.
Treatment - If the condition doesn’t respond to antifungal medication, consult a podiatrist.

Bunions - a prominent bump on the inside of the foot around the big toe joint. Bunions cause redness, tenderness, and pain. Bunions worsen over time and cause discomfort, difficulty walking, and skin problems.
Treatment - In the early stages of the formation, soaking feet in warm water can provide temporary relief.

Corns - thickened areas of skin caused by excessive pressure and friction. They are usually hard and circular, with a waxy or translucent center. They contain a cone-shaped core with a point that can press on a nerve below, causing pain. Corns usually form on the tops, sides, and tips of the toes.
Treatment - Avoid corn removing solutions and medicated pads which can sometimes increase irritation and discomfort. Diabetics and all other individuals with poor circulation should never use any chemical agents to remove corns.
